Google Adsense

Google AdSense is a pay-per-click (PPC) program that can give you advertising revenue from each page on your website with a minimal investment in time and no additional resources. AdSense delivers relevant ads that are targeted to the content people find on your site.

In many advertising networks and websites, including AdSense, the advertiser is charged for advertising their ad only when a user clicks on their ad. How much they pay (for that click) is called their Cost Per Click or CPC. Here you will find some simple and effective AdSense tips that will increase your revenue. If you haven't already joined AdSense program, you should sign up first.  Join here.

AdSense for Feeds

In May 2005, Google announced a limited-participation beta version of AdSense for Feeds, a version of AdSense that runs on RSS and Atom feeds that have more than 100 active subscribers. According to the Official Google Blog, "advertisers have their ads placed in the most appropriate feed articles; publishers are paid for their original content; readers see relevant advertising—and in the long run, more quality feeds to choose from."
AdSense for Feeds works by inserting images into a feed. When the image is displayed by a RSS reader or Web browser, Google writes the advertising content into the image that it returns. The advertisement content is chosen based on the content of the feed surrounding the image. When the user clicks the image, he or she is redirected to the advertiser's website in the same way as regular AdSense advertisements.
AdSense for Feeds remained in its beta state until August 15, 2008, when it became available to all AdSense users.

AdSense for search

A companion to the regular AdSense program, AdSense for search, allows website owners to place Google Custom Search boxes on their websites. When a user searches the Internet or the website with the search box, Google shares 51% of the advertising revenue it makes from those searches with the website owner. However the publisher is paid only if the advertisements on the page are clicked; AdSense does not pay publishers for regular searches.

AdSense for mobile content

AdSense for mobile content allows publishers to generate earnings from their mobile websites using targeted Google advertisements. Just like AdSense for content, Google matches advertisements to the content of a website — in this case, a mobile website. Instead of traditional JavaScript code, technologies such as PHP, ASP and others are used.

AdSense for domains

AdSense for domains allows advertisements to be placed on domain names that have not been developed. This offers domain name owners a way to monetize domain names that are otherwise dormant or not in use. AdSense for domains is currently being offered to all AdSense publishers, but it wasn't always available to all.

AdSense for video

AdSense for video allows publishers with video content to generate revenue using ad placements from Google's extensive Advertising network including popular YouTube videos
Now it's time to show you some tips and tricks that will optimize your AdSense ads.

Build an Empire?

When you’re deciding to become a website publisher you will fall into one of two broad categories:
  • Publish 100 websites that each earn $1 a day profit
  • Publish 1 website that earns $100 a day profit
General or Niche
The reality of it is, most people end up somewhere in between. Having 100 websites leaves you with maintenance, management and content issues. Having one website leaves you open to all sort of fluctuations (search engines algorithm’s, market trends, etc). You can adapt your plan on the way, but you’ll have an easier time if you start out going in the direction of where you want to end up.
You can build your website around general topics or niche ones. Generally speaking niche websites work better with adsense. First off the ad targeting is much better. Secondly as you have a narrow focus your writing naturally becomes more expert in nature. Hopefully this makes you more authority in your field.
If this is your first try at building an adsense website, make it about something you enjoy. It will make the process much easier and less painful to accomplish. You should however make sure that your topic has enough of an ad inventory and the payout is at a level you are comfortable with. You may love medieval folk dancing, but the pool of advertisers for that subject is very small (in fact it’s currently zero).
Once you’ve gotten the hang of how Adsense works on a website, you are going to want to dabble in some high paying keywords, you may even be tempted to buy a high paying keyword list. This does come with some dangers. First off the level of fraud is much higher on the big money terms. Secondly there is a distortion of the supply and demand relationship for these terms. Everyone wants ads on their website that make $35 or more a click, however the number of advertisers who are willing to pay that much is pretty limited. Additionally the competition for that traffic is going to be stiff. So, don’t try to run with the big dogs if you can’t keep up. If you have to ask if you’re a big dog, then chances are, you’re not. I have used a high dollar keywords report from cashkeywords.com and was pleased with my results (see cash keywords free offer recap).
New Sites, Files and Maintenance
When you’re building a new site don’t put adsense on it until it’s finished. In fact I’d go even farther and say don’t put adsense on it until you have built inbound links and started getting traffic. If you put up a website with “lorem ipsum” dummy or placeholder text, your adsense ads will almost certainly be off topic. This is often true for new files on existing websites, especially if the topic is new or different. It may take days or weeks for google’s media bot to come back to your page and get the ads properly targeted. TIP: If you start getting lots of traffic from a variety of IP’s you will speed this process up dramatically.
Managing URL’s and channels
I like to build my sites using include files. I put the header, footer and navigation in common files. It makes it much easier to maintain and manage. I also like to put my adsense code in include files. If I want/need to change my adsense code, it’s only one file I have to work with. TIP: I also use programming to turn the adsense on or off. I can change one global variable to true or false and my adsense ads will appear or disappear.
Adsense channels is one area where it’s really easy to go overboard with stats. You can set up URL channels to compare how one website is doing to another. You can also set up sub channels for each URL. If you wanted to you do something channels like this:
  • domain1.com – 728 banner
  • domain1.com – 336 block
  • domain1.com – text link
  • domain2.com – 728 banner
  • domain2.com – image banner
  • domain2.com – 336 block
  • domain3.com – 300 block
Site Design and Integration
While this is great for testing and knowing who clicks where and why, it makes your reporting a little wonky. Your total number will always be correct but when you look at your reports with a channel break down things will get displayed multiple times and not add up to correct total. Makes things pretty confusing, so decide if you really need/want that level of reporting detail. TIP: At the very least you want to know what URL is generating the income so be sure to enter distinct URL channels.

Once you know you are going to put adsense on your website you’re going to have to consider where to put it. If this is new site it’s easier, if it’s an existing site it’s more difficult. While there are some people who will be able to do it, in most cases I’d say if you just slap the adsense code in, you’ll end up with a frankensite monster (props to Tedster of WMW for the buzzword). While every website is different, Google has published some heat mapsshowing the optimal locations. No surprise that the best spots are middle of the page and left hand side. Now I’ve done really well by placing it on the right, but you should know why you’re doing it that way before hand, and be prepared to change it if it doesn’t work out.
Google has also has published a list of the highest performing ad sizes:
  • 336×280 large rectangle
  • 300×250 inline rectangle
  • 160×600 wide skyscraper
From the sites that I run, I do really well with the 336 rectangle and 160 skyscraper. My next best performing ad size is the 728 leaderboard, I don’t really use the 300 inline rectangle too often. So really it depends on how well you integrate these into your site. Placement can have a dramatic effect on performance. TIP: When working on a new site or new layout you may want to give each location it’s own channel for a little while until you understand the users behavior.
Another ‘trick’ that can increase your CTR is by blending your adsense into your body copy. For example if your body copy is black, remove the adsense border and make the title, text, and URL black.TIP: Try changing all of your page hyperlinks to a high contrast color (like dark red or a bold blue) then change the adsense title to the same color.
Using Images
The one area where I’ve found blended ads don’t perform as well is forums, especially ones with a high volume of repeat members. Regular visitors develop banner blindness pretty quickly. One ‘trick’ to keep the ads from being ignored is to randomize the color and even the placement. As with any of the decisions about location, placement and color it’s a trade off. How much do you emphasize the ads without annoying your visitors. Remember it’s better to have a 1% CTR with 500 regular visitors as opposed to a 5% CTR with 50 visitors. TIP: For forums try placing the adsense ads directly above or below the the first forum thread.
One of the latest ‘secrets’ to make the rounds is using images placed directly above or below an adsense leaderboard. This has been used for a while but came out in a digital point forum thread where a member talked about quadrupling their CTR. Basically you set up the adsense code in a table with four images that line up directly with the ads. Whether or not this is deceptive is fuzzy and very subjective. Obviously four blinking arrows would be ‘enticing people to click’ and be against the adsense TOS. However placing pictures of 4 laptops over laptops ads isn’t, so use your best judgment here and look at it from the advertiser or Google’s perspective. If you have a question as to your implementation being ‘over the line’ write to adsense and ask them to take a look.
As far as using the images, I’ve done it and can tell you it definitely works. You get the best results when the images ‘complete the story the ads are telling’. For example if you have ads about apple pies, use pictures of freshly baked apple pies, instead of granny smith, Macintosh, pink lady, and braeburn apples. TIP: Don’t limit yourself to using images only on that size ad unit, it works just as well with the other sizes, like the 336 rectangle.
Multiple Ad Units

I got a little criticizm for this and rightly so, as I wasn’t specific as I could have been. Do not use very identifiable brand name or products for your images. Use generic non-specific stock images whenever possible and appropriate.
Adsense in RSS
Another way to increase ad revenue is to use multiple ad units. According to Google’s TOS you are allowed to post up to three ad units per page. Similar to standard search results the highest paying ad units will be served first and the lowest being served last. If there is enough of an ad inventory, place all three ad units. However you should pay attention to the payouts. Current assumption is you get 60% of the revenue (on a $0.05 click you get $0.03). So if a click from the third ad unit is only paying between 3 to 5 cents you may want to omit it from your page. This is one are where giving your ad units channels does have value. If one ad unit is getting a higher percentage of click throughs you’ll want to make sure the highest paying ads are being served there. TIP:Use CSS positioning to get your highest paying ads serving in the location with the highest CTR.
With the growth of blogs and RSS feeds you’re starting to see adsense included in the feeds now. IMHO this doesn’t work, and here’s why:
  • You only get to place one ad unit.
  • You have no control over finding the ‘sweet spot’ for the ad unit.
  • The ads are usually poorly targeted (this is getting better).
  • People develop ‘banner blindness’.
Affiliate Sites
I know people like being able to read full postings in their feed reader, and there are at least a dozen other reasons for full posts from pleasing your users to mobile offline computing, all of which are completely valid. However if your website depends on generating adsense revenue to survive, then bring them to the site and show them the ads there.
PPC Arbitrage
Placing Adsense on affiliate sites is tricky. Are you giving up a $10, $20, or $30 sale for a $1 click? This is something you have to test on your own to figure out. If you aren’t converting now it’s definitely worth a try. I like to use adsense on my article pages. For example let’s say you had an affiliate website where you sold shoes. You’re going to need some related articles to ‘flesh out’ the site. Things like ‘getting a shoe shine’ or ‘finding a shoe repair shop’ these are excellent spots for adsense. While you won’t get rich, they will usually provide a small steady income and cover things like hosting costs.TIP: If you find you have pages getting more than 50 clicks per month add more pages about this topic, and link the pages together. Mine you logs for the search terms used.
This is a dicey subject so I’m going to steer clear of precise examples. Basically you bid on low volume uber niche terms at a very low cost. You set up landing page that contains high payout ads for the related general topic. You are looking for terms with a large gap between the price you are bidding on adwords and the price you are getting on Adsense. If you pay $0.10 a click and get $1.00 a click you make $0.90 each click. To get your adsense ad approved you will need to ‘add some value’ along the way. You can make a killing or get taken to the cleaners with this one, so make sure you know what you are doing before you try it.

Google Webmaster Tools

Google Webmaster Tools is a no-charge web service by Google for webmasters. It allows webmasters to check indexing status and optimize visibility of their websites.
It has tools that let the webmasters:
  • Submit and check a sitemap
  • Check and set the crawl rate, and view statistics about how Googlebot accesses a particular site
  • Generate and check a robots.txt file. It also helps to discover pages that are blocked in robots.txt by chance.
  • List internal and external pages that link to the site
  • See what keyword searches on Google led to the site being listed in the SERPs, and the click through rates of such listings
  • View statistics about how Google indexes the site, and if it found any errors while doing it
  • Set a preferred domain (e.g. prefer example.com over www.example.com or vice versa), which determines how the site URL is displayed in SERPs
Google Webmaster Tools provides you with detailed reports about your pages' visibility on Google. To get started, simply add and verify your site and you'll start to see information right away. Link:  Here are just a few features of Google Webmaster Tools:

1. Errors
Google Webmaster Tools will show all sorts of errors with a site. Not only does it show broken links on the site, but also links that are driving traffic to the site for which there is no valid page. Google even tells you pages it knows about but has been restricted from crawling. That’s good to know incase someone accidently blocks to much.

How to create a successful Website

Thanks to competition among Web-hosting providers, and the falling costs of Web storage, it's never been easier to get a Web site up and running -- from buying the domain name to building a site to setting up a payment system to tracking traffic.

Any one can create a website. There are so many free tools available that makes this task easy and as painless as possible. But just because you can create a website does not mean that it will be a good quality successful website.

If you are going to do business on the internet, then you need to make sure that your website is a success. There are many ways in which a website can be measured as a success. Most often people refer to the look of a website to determine it's success.
Although the look of your website is important, fancy websites don't make sales. All they do is make people’s mouth’s drop and say wow! They then move on to the next fancy website. There is much more to creating a quality website than just look and feel. Although the visual element of a website is important, it must not overshadow the other equally important aspects of web development.

To make a website successful, you must create a website that will be of interest to your target market and make them want to visit your website over and over again. In addition, your website should lead your visitors to take the action you desire, such as joining your mailing list, or making a purchase.

Your Websites Niche.

The first step is to understand and select your websites niche. Which corner of the internet will you reside in. You need to concentrate on one niche, and target those readers. Trying to cover a fruit salad of topics will not work. For example, if your website is about dogs, then everything on you site should be about dogs in some form or other. Your blog, your forum, your theme, your visual and graphical element should all shout out that this is all about dogs. Don’t be talking about cats, and horses, and butterflies, unless it applies to dogs. To have a successful website, you need to provide and target a specific audience.

Your Website’s Theme.

Now that you have selected your website’s niche, it’s time to select a theme. The visual elements of your site.  Select colour that communicate to your audience clearly what your website is all about. Remember simple is better. Choose colours that match and do not conflict, as well as colours that are easy on the eyes. Let me be frank, not many people can handle shocking pink or bright green, even though your beloved poodle is dyed that colour. That's your choice of colours, your audience might not like it at all.

Always be consistent with your webpage design. This is a very important step to help make a website successful. The layout for your website should be the same on each page. If you make it different, your visitors will become confused. In addition, it will make your website appear to be unprofessional. Your website design should include the same layout, logo, and navigation setup on each page.

Using a CMS, or Content Management System will go a long way to achieve this goal. CMS’s separate the design aspect from the data so that you can concentrate on each aspect separately.

Backgrounds and Text.

This goes hand in hand with selecting the proper theme. But please, please be extra careful when selecting your theme that you do not have hard to read text and clashing colour for your text and background.

Studies have shown that the best combination is a white background with a dark or black text. Distracting backgrounds will make the text hard to read. A good rule of thumb is to just use common sense and keep your website simple. This alone is a great way to help make a website successful.

Animated Graphics and Background Sound.

Back in the 90’s this might have been acceptable. But a true feature of a amateur website is loads of animated graphics and horrible irritating tinny background music that you cannot switch off. Please people do not use that horrible background music. If it is one thing that scares people away from websites it is annoying background music.

If you're using animated graphics, it is important that you use them sparingly. One maybe two are acceptable, but my suggestion is to try and do away with animations. Graphics that continually flash are VERY annoying and may prevent your visitors from returning to your website in the future.

Website Navigation.

If people cant find their way around your site or if they can navigate to other pages, then they will leave and never return. You know the exact layout of your site. You know where every page is, what the page name is. But I do not, and neither do other people. Help me out here won’t you?
It is very important to include good navigational links on every page. They should be displayed at the top, bottom, left or right side of your webpage. In addition, your visitors should be able to get to any web page within your website within four clicks.

Be sure to include a website site map as well. This helps tremendously if one is looking for a specific page or you want to go to a specific page with one click. Also, search engines love site maps. It helps them to index your site more efficiently.

Using Meta Tags.

For your website to be successful you need to include META tags between the HEAD tags of your webpage. META tags help the search engines to know what keywords are relevant to the webpage. They are also used to tell the search engines what the webpage is about. Many search engines will display this description within the search results. Many people think that meta tags are not used anymore. Don’t be mistaken. They are still used extensively by search engines and the like. Just not in the same way as before.

HTML Heading Tags.

When you begin writing your content, it is very important that you use theHTML H1 heading tag with your main title at the top of your webpage. In addition, use the HTML H2 tags for your sub-titles. This is very important, as some search engines place relevance on the text displayed with heading tags. Think of heading as newspaper headlines. Their purpose is to draw attention to the most important articles, to briefly describe what the article is all about, and then to entice you to read the article. As the default text for the H1 heading tag is very large, you may want to use CSS style sheets to display the heading tags in the font style and size you prefer.

Spelling and Grammar.

Always make sure you proof read and spell check your web pages for errors. I find it best to get someone else who has not written or already read the article to proof read. Because they will often catch mistakes you you have missed. This is a difficult one for me because I have dyslexia. But it should not be an excuse for poor grammar and spelling. It is also very important that your webpage doesn't have any broken images or links.

Browsers and screen resolutions.

Oh the pain of a web developer! Testing your website in the top browsers at different screen resolutions. There is nothing more frustrating for readers when your web page is displayed incorrectly on their browser, and is either too big for their screen or too small.
But to start off, you can check with the most common and most used browsers.
Now I know you cannot cater for everyone. This is where good analytics come in. Over time you will be able to see who browses your website, what their browsers are and what screen resolutions are used.
For screen resolutions it is best to cater for the lowest common resolution. Most time that will be 800x600. But my stats show that today the most common size is 1024X768. Also remember to leave space for a left and right border. Don’t design right to the edge of the screen.
If you are using a fluid design, one that sizes with the screen, then remember the smallest resolution that your website can resize to and work on that. Normally 800x600. For your website to be successful you need to get the right resolution.

You can either open your webpage in your browser and then change your computer's screen resolution, or there are website's online that you can visit.

Interactivity

Another way to make a website successful is to make the website interactive. This can be done by including a targeted forum that complements your website, a form in which they can subscribe to an ezine, a feedback form to enable them to give their opinion, or an informative blog in which visitors can comment.

Important Web Pages

When you launch your website, it is very important that you include the following web pages:
  • About - The 'About' page is used to tell your visitors about you and/or your company.
  • Privacy - The 'Privacy' page is used to let your visitors know what you do with their personal information, such as their email address.
  • Terms and Conditions - The 'Terms and Conditions' page should be displayed on your website for your protection.
  • Site Map - A 'Site Map' is used to help the search engines index your website more easily.
You can learn more about all of these pages by doing a search through your favourite search engine. They are very important and will help make a website successful.

Metallica Is a Successful Band – They Have a Successful Website

Think of your website like a music band. The music business is very similar to the website business. Lets take the band Metallica, if you look closely at the band you will notice a few things:
  1. They have a niche. They do not sing about flowers and sunshine. Most of their songs are about pain, suffering, end of times and evil. They choose their niche and they stick with it.
  2. They have a targeted audience. Go to a Metallica concert and you will notice that all the people in the audience look similar. Long hair and dark clothes. I am sure if you asked them about their hobbies and interests you would find that they like the same things. I doubt that there are too many basket weavers at a Metallica concert.
  3. They have an image. Their logo looks jagged and sharp and shiny like a samurai blade. The logo looks like it could cut your head off. The band members all dress black and usually walk around with a frown. Their Albums covers do not remind you of a beautiful Sunday morning walk in the park. Skulls, crosses and coffins. Their image is death, or soon to be dead, or wish to be dead.
  4. They are always creating new material. Metallica has a lot of albums and they are still coming out with more. Every few years there is a new album full of death and suffering. They do not lose their old fans and they pick up new ones. By keeping fresh and up to date their fans keep coming back for more pain.
These basic principles have made Metallica a successful band. To have a successful website your need to follow the same principles.
Having a niche, knowing your audience, having an image, and constantly improving your website are simple things, but they are the real secrets to having a successful website.
These four pillars do not just apply to websites - they apply to all industries that cater to an audience: authors, movie producers, music bands, clothes designers, all follow these basic principles. By ignoring these key pillars you drastically decrease your chances of having a successful website.

So to wrap up here are the simple steps for a sucessfull website or blog:

Steps

  1. 1
Think about what kind of website you will be doing. There's no point in paying $200 for a domain name and then realizing that you've no clue what to do with it. You could make a blog, a fansite, a games site, a help site, or a million other things.

  2. 2
Map out all your plans, create your website. This could mean going on Piczo or Geocities and making one or it could mean even paying for your own unique domain name.
  3. 3
Give your website a funky layout that people like looking at. Make sure it's not a sickly shade of green or a polka dot design that gives you a headache.
  4. 4
Be certain that you have something to offer. Give plenty of information, links, images, widgets, et cetera. Don't make the information too dull, and accompany the text with pictures when necessary.
  5. 5
Make sure you can receive feedback from your viewers. Put your e-mail on the website or have a forum/chatbox.
  6. 6
Make your website interactive as well as informative. Put quizzes, polls and plenty of input opportunities on your website. Don't cram it all with widgets, though.
  7. 7
Establish a base of fans, viewers and friends. Give them something that will encourage them to keep coming back.
  8. 8
Make yourself known in the world of whatever you're writing about. Get to know the owners of similar sites and get lots of people to link to you.
  9. 9
Even when your site is famous, don't forget to regularly update. This is a surefire way to keep the people coming.

Conclusion.
Do you have any extra points to share that I might have missed. Please share them in the comments below. If you follow these simple rules, you will have a successful website in no time. But keep in mind success is often a personal view point.

It’s simple to use and also works well for those without much HTML knowledge. The good part of PsycHo is that if your Internet connection breaks in between, you can still work on and complete designing your template.
